Our History:
Gaelige League has a long and varied history.
Since the foundation of the branch in 1902, the organisation has experienced ups and downs and periods of rebirth and rejuvenation!
Explore the timeline below to discover more about our intriguing History .......
The Beginning
1902
The branch was established.
The organisation enjoyed great success in its inaugural year:
- Language classes were well supported
- The branch organised it’s first Feis on the 16th November 1902.
The Dark Days
1940-1981
Despite the initial success of the branch, the use of the Irish language in the area gradually declined. By 1940, the once thriving Lower Mourne branch had died out.
The Rebirth
1980’s
Under the direction of local men Sean Rodgers, Willie McGreevy and Liam McGreevy the Lower Mourne Gaelige League was revived. Their efforts to rekindle interest in the Irish Language met with great success, supported by CLG Glasdrumman and Gerry Downey of Comhaltas Uladh.
